My brother has a friend up in Utah who has dubbed himself a “husband, father, technologist, and entrepreneur in progress.” He keeps a blog called Smooth Harold which features posts on all kinds of topics. He mostly rotates among technology, business, sports, and the occasional drift into his passion for video games. Today he posted an incredible video from YouTube showing a surfer riding a *major* wave for an extremely long period of time. Go watch it. The video got me thinking…
I recently listened to Seth Godin’s new book The Dip on my wife’s iPod. (remember?) Godin talks about the importance of riding out the Dip - all the nitty-gritty difficult work that is necessary before bursting forth to greatness. He talks about quitting at the right time and for the right reasons.
I think the book and the video tie together nicely. I have often felt like this surfer throughout my educational pursuits. There’s been many times when I thought the wave was too big to ride out, but the payoff in the end will be incredible. So I’m not quitting anytime soon. I may get salt water in my mouth from time to time, but I have to keep telling myself that it will be worth it.
