Business Card

I got a package in the mail last week. It came all the way from London. It was like Christmahannaqwanzikah. I tore into the box like a fat kid on chocolate. A smile spread across my face as I browsed through the contents. Then I got to thinking…should I really have ordered these? I’d like to know what you think.

I ordered myself a batch of brand new business cards. After reading a post entitled Business Card Mistakes by Seth Godin last summer, I have had Moo.com bookmarked in hopes that I would need to eventually print some business cards. After being hired as a reporter for the school newspaper, I knew this was my chance. There are likely going to be times when I meet someone or talk with someone for a story, and I will have to give them my name and contact information.

I think they turned out really nice. I just wonder if they were worth it. There are some people that think the practice of handing out business cards is archaic. In this world of electronic information, I would tend to agree. I don’t have too many cards laying around. I usually put people’s contact info straight into my iPod Touch or my cell phone.

There’s a part of me that still likes this old tradition of “let me give you my card.” As long as it’s done well. I am not supporting the traditional Realtor business card with the 1980s GlamourShot. I also don’t think that a card should be cluttered with every possible way for someone to contact you. (What’s that phrase? Keep it Simple Stupid?…) Maybe two or three different ways. If you look at mine pictured above, I’ve combined my name and email line into one. I had to be clever, since these cards are only about 1″ tall. If you have your own card, you may be interested in figuring out if it passes the trash test.

I’m curious to know what you think.
